Wireless Task Group

CHARGE TO THE GROUP:

The purpose of the CCFIT Wireless Task Group is to:

• Review current issues with wireless deployments at UC Davis


• Determine the goals of wireless networking at UC Davis


• Evaluate the short- and long-term proposals to expand wireless on campus (incl. ongoing maintenance plans)


• Consider policy and implementation issues; define high-priority coverage


• Make recommendations by March 31, 2006 to CCFIT and the Interim Vice Provost-IET

PRELIMINARY QUESTIONS TO GUIDE TASK GROUP'S WORK:
(These questions are to be used as a starting point and refined by the task group as they delve into the issues related to expanding wireless around campus)

1. What are the key issues with current wireless deployments?
     - What are the current risks with unknown access points?
     - Why does the campus need to address issues with the way(s) wireless is deployed?
     - Why are these deployments problematic?

2. What is the long-term strategy for expanding wireless on campus?
     - Strategy (how will wireless be expanded?)
     - Implementation timeframe under consideration
     - Role of IET, departments
     - Scalability (how will the need for ongoing quality of wireless connectivity be addressed
       as the number of users continues to grow?)
     - Funding (how much, source, etc.)
     - Benefits to the campus

3. What is the short-term strategy to bridge the wireless gap?
     - Proposed approach
     - Issues & benefits

4. What are the issues associated with expansion of wireless networking?
     - How will these issues be addressed?
     - Coverage issues: How do we define high-priority wireless coverage?
     - Policy issues: What policy issues need to be addressed?
