Meeting Minutes

Present: Tor Cross, Lori Lubin, Jan Dinkens, Jan Ilkiw, Andy Jones, Liz Gibson, Tim Leamy

1. Another quick PRS update
Robert Ralston to come to next meeting to update us on PRS. He is the point person on PRS in CTS.

The PRS roll-out seems to be going well. Some book publishers caused confusion by trying to give faculty receivers. But everyone should be getting the receivers from the Bookstore.

More demo clickers and a tablet coming from Interwrite

2. CTS Summer Update
Added 3 additional classrooms - from Vet Med move. Updated the computer lab in Shields Library to add a few more stations.

Upgraded the printing infrastructure with more printers and faster printers. Changed the print charging policy to 60 free and 30 grace. We added print queue displays (large flat panel monitors) above the printers in the busiest labs to show the print queue and where the jobs
were printed.

CTS plans to start piloting wireless printing very soon. See http://wirelessprinting.ucdavis.edu for more info.

CTS is very involved with new classroom building at UCDMC. They helped with the planning and will be providing support staff for the A-V equipment there.

Jan is involved with a UC IT Workgroup - UC wide strategies to improve infrastructure, classroom, teaching, and learning spaces.

She recently toured Iowa State and U Michigan and can bring presentation in about a month. A neat collaborative space at Iowa was a large lecture hall, but with chairs that can swivel so the class could form small groups discussion. Those chairs also have arms that can actually
hold a laptop.

CTS and Vet Med and purchasing Teamspot, a collaborative tool.
Unfortunately it's hung up in Purchasing.

3. Mediaworks update

Breeze pilot
1. Breeze meeting - online collaboration and communication
2. Breeze presenter - video, powerpoint, index, search engine
3. Breeze training - record keeping / quiz builder / assessment

Ran into some issues, found Elluminate - now piloting that. A whole new set of problems. Breeze is getting better and since Adobe had purchased Macromedia is renamed Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro. Mediaworks will decide on Breeze vs Elluminate in December.

SAKAI / Smartsite update
Continue to pilot. Evaluation of 2.2 - upgrade in November. Will do a gap analysis with MyUCDavis. Version 2.3 will come out in December and 2.4 in May/June. Those updates should have major improvements in the quiz and gradebook. So UCD will evaluate at that time to see what additional work needs to be done.

Jan I. had a concern about high stakes assessment - not there yet. Just formative assessment. Authentication or reliability??? Need it to be reliable - and proctored. Liz will follow up with Sakai.

PRS uploading - Kirk is looking into it. There is interest in forming a UC Collaborative group for Sakai - out of Media director group, ITGC working group, etc.

Vet med in full production without SAMIGO (quiz builder). The projected time line: Fall 07 available to campus with myUCDavis CMS still available for 07-08 and Fall 08 full transition.

Mediaworks is collaborating with TRC and Library regarding pedagogy, technology, best practices, etc.

Liz reported from the AACE conference - pedagogy is K-12 andragogy is the current hip word.

The Photography group has a Better-Light camera that can take 360 images.

Some comments from Educause. Learning spaces - movable furniture, screens, fishbowl room for discussions were hot topics. One Library developed auto-book retrieval - reduce storage by using robotic arm and minimal storage. This opened up the rest of the space for collaborative
learning.

4. Faculty mentoring faculty program
Andy report that 20 faculty participants enrolled. Positive and supportive group. The dynamics have changed. There are not so many problems with Sakai, so getting more into teaching issues.

Agenda items for next meeting (11/14):
1. Grad student ET partners
2. IET website update - going live this Thursday and Friday
