CAMPUS COUNCIL FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY WORKING GROUP
Tuesday , October 10, 2006
307 Surge IV

Meeting Minutes

Present: Tor Cross, Dave Osleger, Lori Lubin, Jon Wagner, Tim Leamy

Meeting update - our next meeting will be 10/24 from 11-noon in 307
SurgeIV. The meeting after that has been moved from 11/7 to 11/14.

1. Summer Updates

Personal Response Systems (PRS)
The campus standardized on the InterWrite PRS RF system over the summer. Over a dozen classes are using it this quarter. There are roughly 3,500 students in those classes and the Bookstore has already sold over 2,800. You can find more info at http://cts.ucdavis.edu/prs/

The chosen system seems to work well. The Student ID is entered by the student into the device and is sent with the student's answers. So it's pretty simple to associate data with a student.

Physics and Vet Med have switched to the new system. Physics got mixed messages regarding how they should get the receivers. The Bookstore is supposed to handle that, but the book publisher was getting involved. It is best to let the Bookstore handle it.

CTS is providing support for instructors using the PRS in their classes. Contact Robert Ralston or email cts@ucdavis.edu

The campus needs to make sure faculty have enough training. The was a training session right before the start of Fall. Other ideas for training include:
-another demo/training session
-set up a PRS users group
-panel presentation
-documentation on how to use PRS in classes (not technically how to
use, but how to integrate in class)

The TRC is planning a "SITT reunion" for 11/9 that will have a session on PRS.

The Bookstore should have a list of classes that are using PRS. So we may be able to ask those instructors if we can sit in while they use the PRS system in the class.

Podcasting
10 classrooms now have the built-in digital recorders (see http://clm.ucdavis.edu/podcast/podcast-rooms.html for list). 21 classes have are using the podcast system so far this quarter. Portable recorders are available for loan from CTS. There seems to be a lot of faculty interest in using the system. Jon relayed how he has received some interest in recording outside of the classroom.

2. Projects projects for the year

Mostly done - shouldn't need too much attention
Podcasting

Need to watch - items that we need to track

Big projects for this year
Departmental ET Partners - The TRC is still interested in pursuing this. The ET Partner would be a grad student with a faculty mentor. There needs to be a conversation with the Deans to make this happen. It will most likely take a additional allocation of money to departments
for this specific purpose.

Academic integrity - TRC will try to get an inventory of what faculty are doing.

Better communication to faculty - The question was raised on how to make SITT available to faculty who could not attend. Jon reported that the TRC has a website with info from this year's SITT. (Please see the email sent out earlier today.) There will also be an article in IT
Times. However, this is an area which needs more work.

Copyright/Intellectual Property Issues - what's ok when faculty use copyrighted material? It's hard to say sometimes. Also the issue of others using UCD materials. This area is very confused currently and it would be good if we could help clarify.
