CAMPUS COUNCIL FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY WORKING GROUP
Wednesday, June 06, 2006
307 Surge IV

Meeting Minutes

Present: Andy Jones, Jon Wagner, Dave Osleger, Andy Alvarez, Lori Lubin, Jan Dickens, Tim Leamy

Continuing the discussion on big topics/projects we discussed this year.
Tor wanted to set priorities and ownership on them to ensure they move forward. The list is:
1. Faculty survey recommendations
A. decentralized support - faculty committees
B. decentralized support - grad student "ed tech partners"
C. hire professional instructional designers
D. increased communication to faculty about what is currently available
E. recognizing faculty contributions - merit/promotions
2. Sakai
3. Audience Response System,
4. Plagiarism detection / academic integrity

Regarding 1.E. Peter Yellowlees is writing departmental chairs of all the pilot participants of Sakai and podcasting faculty letters to thank them for their support of instructional technology. Hopefully this will help. It was suggested that something similar be done for the faculty serving on CCFIT committees and piloting ARS.

Concerning #2, IET is still planning on implementing portions of Sakai this summer. Still on track for a slow rollout over Fall and Winter.
Sakai will have a new name - not myUCDavis version 2.

For #3, we are still attempting to test the RF systems. Tor will be testing it this summer in class. However, the vendor wants to loan us the older version of the system. So that's not too useful. So unfortunately we are still in a wait and see mode. We need to test the RF systems and work out this student registration issues. From a few meeting back we agreed it would be ideal if UCD maintain the registration of the clicker ID to student. That way the clicker IDs could be downloaded as part of the roster from myUCDavis (or Sakai - whatever it is named)

On to #4. The TRC will be doing a survey of what is in use in campus.
Campus SJA didn't seem that enthusiastic about the commercial products due to cost and intellectual property concerns. It might be possible to build a campus system. Perhaps there might be something that can be integrated in Sakai since the Sakai members are likely also interested in this problem.

So unfortunately most of these issues will still be with us next Fall.
I hope you all have a good summer and I look forward to seeing you next Fall.
