Online Teaching Evaluations Task Group


CHARGE TO THE GROUP: DRAFT

The purpose of the CCFIT Online Teaching Evaluations Task Group is to:

  1. Investigate effective models of online teaching evaluations on campus (e.g., School of Veterinary Medicine, Medical Center, College of Engineering, possibly Sakai) and at other universities.
  2. Assess the anticipated benefits of a UC Davis online teaching evaluation system.
  3. Identify key functional requirements.
  4. Identify concerns and issues.
  5. Make recommendations on how best to introduce and implement an online teaching evaluation system at UC Davis.

The group should seek input from key campus constituencies, including Academic Personnel (the functional unit that oversees teaching and course evaluations), the Academic Senate, the Academic Federation, the Teaching Resources Center, Information and Educational Technology, the School of Education, and others, as needed.

This group will meet during Winter and Spring Quarters, and will present findings and recommendations in a brief report to Academic Personnel and CCFIT. A report will be provided at the June 12, 2006 CCFIT meeting.

PRELIMINARY QUESTIONS TO GUIDE TASK GROUP'S WORK:
(These questions are offered as a starting point only.)

1. Rationale for online teaching evaluations
     a. Definition and scope of campus online teaching evaluation system (e.g., creation,
        administering, delivery, reporting of results, and archiving of course evaluations at the
        course level, academic program level, school level, and university level)
     b. Needs and objectives
     c. Anticipated benefits, challenges, and opportunities (for students, faculty, administrators,
        departments, campus, etc.

2. Requirements for a campuswide system
     a. Desired functionality and features
     b. Security concerns (e.g., confidentiality of evaluation data, compliance with campus
         Cyber-Safety standards)
     c. Integration with major campus systems (e.g., learning management system, Banner,
         faculty merit and promotion system, online graduate admissions, etc.)
     d. Sample questionnaire (e.g., standardized questionnaire with ability to customize?)

3. Implementation approach
     a. Strategy for introducing the system to departments, instructors, students,
         support staff, etc.
     b. Recommendations for ensuring good response rates.
