About CCFIT

The Campus Council for Information Technology (CCFIT) was formed in June 2004 when the Academic and Administrative Computing Councils (also known as AC4 and AdC3) combined formally into one council and adopted a new charge. (For some background information, see the story that announced the formation of the CCFIT).

Charge
Under the leadership of Council Chair Joe Kiskis, the Council provides advice and recommendations to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor and to the Vice Provost for Information and Educational Technology (IET), on educational and information technology and its use at UC Davis in support of instruction, research, administration, and public service.

The role of the CCFIT and its steering committee has been fine-tuned in preparation for this new academic year. Two main principles have guided recent adjustments: the critical importance of reflecting community input into the Council's analysis of significant technology-related projects and prioritization, and the Council's complementary role in the campus information technology coordination and governance structure (including the administrative IT services roadmap, the Technology Infrastructure Forum, etc.). Specifically, the Council assists the Provost and the Vice Provost for IET by:

  • Reviewing technology-related proposals and plans, including those with significant anticipated impacts on our campus community, and developing recommendations to be shared with all appropriate parties. The Council may also recommend its own proposals and plans.
  • Providing substantive input into the processes and deliberations of the CCFIT steering committee (see below), with a particular emphasis on key topics, needs and areas of concern to faculty, staff and students.
  • Coordinating the discussion and exploration of information technology opportunities, issues and activities with the variety of units and groups represented on the Council.
  • Promoting effective technology-related information-sharing, collaboration and partnerships across the campus. The Council provides a forum for the wider campus community to stay informed about major academic, administrative and research computing developments at UC Davis, and to identify additional topics for Council consideration and discussion.

Membership
Council membership is selected so as to represent a broad cross-section of the campus community, from students, faculty, and staff, to campus administrators. Members serve one-year terms, renewable annually. This broad representation assists the Council in making recommendations such that campus resources are deployed to their most strategic advantage.

Communications
Frequent and ongoing two-way communication with the campus community and specific campus constituencies is a high priority for the Council. To help meet this goal, all members are responsible for reporting back to their constituent groups periodically on topics under Council consideration, and for submitting to the Council feedback on those topics as well as new discussion items, issues and concerns from their constituencies. In addition, every year, Council will produce and publicize an annual report summarizing past discussions, featuring feedback from constituencies, outlining findings, and identifying topics for future discussion.

To fulfill the charge to the Council, the Chair is assisted by a steering committee that guides the review of IET priorities and plans (including alignment with budget), helps ensure appropriate campus discussion of IT investments, and provides general review of academic impacts of administrative IT issues.

Meetings
General Council meetings are normally held once a month, from October through June.
In addition, the Council's meeting schedule, meeting minutes, and other materials are posted on the Council's Web site (http://ccfit.ucdavis.edu).
